Saturday Turbo and I headed out to Targhee Pass on the Continental Divide for the Lionhead area near West Yellowstone. We went to ski some terrain he, Dean and Heather did last weekend. Another area Dean has found in his endless search for cool, steep powder lines. I have had a pain in the butt chest cold for the last 10 days so I didn't think I would go uphill too well. Turned out okay since Turbo did all the trail breaking.
It was 16 F to start with 30 mph winds forecast. Once we got into the trees on the 2 mile approach it was virtually calm. The avalanche forecast for the region was 'Considerable" to "High" so we planned to be as careful as possible. We dug 3 test pits on the way up. Each one had surprisingly different characteristics but all passed as relatively safe. We felt it was good to go. The new snow seemed 12-14 inches deep from the top and was awesome. A ton of powder turns finished by a 7 foot (or so) jump. I landed the first time okay but the scary snow snake nailed me the second. How could it get any better than this?!
YEEHAA!!
Oh Shit, I'm gonna die!!
