Rainbow Mountain

Wednesday started the day with temps of -14 in Gillmore. Fortunately, once the sun came out it warmed to 9. Turbo, Dean, Matt, Chad and I headed up Rainbow mountain. A peak in the Lemhi range just above the Charcoal Kilns. The big snow bowl turned into a steep, windblown, icy uphill slog. Part of the way up we had to pack the skis and boot to a plateau at 9800 ft. We skinned up a narrow ridge the remainder of the way to the summit. Found some deep sugary snow in the trees followed by icy skiing and a challenging breakable crust in the steep gully. A great group for another fun day!

Beautiful view of Bell Mountain to the south from the summit of Rainbow.

Too steep for skins.

Turbo leading the way to the summit.

The summit in the sunshine.

Looking south over the Birch Creek valley. Dean and Chad on the ridge.
